Good Morning 5th graders,
I hope that as you get up this morning you will take a look at the new Activity Board this week on my web page. I have been so pleased that many of you have written me e-mails sharing your writing with me.
This week we will have two online experiences. Tomorrow from 10:30-11:30 will be my regular office hours. I will send out a Zoom link for that meeting tomorrow morning. Hopefully you will click and join us! During that hour we will spend 30 minutes answering your questions and going over the learning activities for this week. There will be both 4th and 5th graders at that time. From 11:00-11:30 Ms. Roberts will join us and answer any technology questions that you have.

Then, on Wednesday we will be meeting for our class time for this week. This week, we will meet at 11:00 for 5th grade. This meeting will be between 30 minutes to 1 hour. I would like each of you to come prepared to discuss a book that you have been reading. Each person will give a brief book talk sharing the story elements of the book, as well as whether you enjoyed the book or not. Hopefully, we will leave the meeting with an idea of good books to read! I will send the Zoom invitation out for the class meeting on Wednesday morning.
Please continue to e-mail, DOJO, or text me any questions that you have!
Have a great day!
Mrs. Koch

Good Morning 4th Graders and Spectacular Parents,

It was wonderful to see some of you come to the virtual "office hours" that we had yesterday. If you weren't there, we went over how to locate your e-mail, how to find the Activity Boards, and some of the new things that you find when you log into Clever. Today we will have a class meeting. This will be 30 minutes where each of you who join will have a chance to answer 3 questions: 1. What is the best thing about not being in school? 2. What is the worst thing about not being in school? and 3. What are some of the things that you are doing with this time off?

Remember, all online meetings are recorded for security and parents should be nearby (or actively participating) during this time. Please use the Zoom invite below to join us from 11:00-11:30. See you then!

Hi 4th and 5th graders -

It's me again! Guess what Ms. Kim told me? She told me that I had sent you an invitation for office hours at 10:30 PM - AT NIGHT!!!! Yikes!

Please use this invitation instead. It is for tomorrow - TUESDAY at 10:30 AM - in the morning!! I would like to see you all come and discuss any questions that you have about your learning. Ms. Kim will also be joining us to help with this. Then, remember on Wednesday we will have another meeting to discuss what's been going on in your lives.

Frances Koch is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Mrs. Koch

Good Morning Parents and Students,

Tomorrow (Tuesday) morning from 10:30-11:30 I will be holding "office hours". This is a time for me to answer any questions that you have about your online learning. This includes helping you with log in information, showing you where the activity boards are, and helping you get to Clever.

I will be using an app called "Zoom". The invite for these "office hours" is below. Please understand as we work with new technology that we will be developing protocols as we go. When we have online meetings, I will be making the assumption that parents are aware and available during that time. Also, zoom has a feature that allows students to show a background of their choice, and not have to have their personal space on display. Please experiment with this.

On Wednesday, I will be having a class meeting. I will have a meeting for the 5th graders from 10:30-11:00. I will have a meeting for the 4th graders from 11:00-11:30. I will sent out the Zoom invitation for those meetings tomorrow. For our first time together we will be sharing a little bit about what's been going on the last month. In the future we will use that time to work on academic activities.

So, here is the ZOOM invitation for the Office Hours tomorrow. Please use it if you need help with any of the online activities we are suggesting. Otherwise, I will see everyone on Wednesday!

Frances Koch is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Dear Parents and Students,
I hope that all of you have taken a look at the Activity Boards posted to my web page. You simply go to Vaughan and then find my class page. Select the 4th or 5th grade Activity Boards.
I have already heard from many of you about your experience using some of the activities.
Next week, I will be hosting an online "office hour" to make sure you are able to find the activities. I will be able to help you work on any activity that you are having trouble with.
We will change the activity board every week with new activities. Mr. Boyd is working on how to help students who do not have internet access.
I have already received one writing prompt in an e-mail! That student wanted to visit Hawaii. WOW! Me too!!! Please get your writing prompts over to me by Friday. Send them to my e-mail address: kochfe@pwcs.edu
Have a wonderful day,
Mrs. Koch

Good Morning Parents and Students,
This morning I would like to encourage all of you to check out Vaughan's Activity Boards. We have developed them for you to use as you continue to learn at home.
You can find them by going to Elizabeth Vaughan's home page and clicking on Class Pages. Then look at 4/5 LA/SS and find Mrs.Koch's page. You will see a way to click onto the 5th grade Activity Board.
These activities are intended to be done this week. Please let me know how it goes for you!
I will try and contact each family this week. Please let me know how I can help you.
Next week we will try to have our first Zoom meeting to see how everyone is doing. I will send you information about that soon.
Miss you!!
Mrs. Koch

Good Morning Parents and Students,
I hope that you all enjoyed a good weekend and that everyone is healthy in your house.
This morning, the staff of Elizabeth Vaughan is getting together online to develop a learning calendar for the students. This will be posted online. I will share the details of this once I have them.

Many of you have already been doing very valuable activities with your children. Please keep that up! We will be working to add to that with some optional learning activities that will give you extra ideas and focus to keep your students engaged in learning.

Also, please don't forget that there are several schools in Prince William that are providing free "to go" meals for children under 18. Two of those schools are Woodbridge Middle School and Fred Lynn Middle School. The serve meals from 9-11 Monday-Friday.

I'll send you a DOJO and and e-mail later today letting you know about our learning calendar and how it is set up.
Please let me know of any questions or needs that you have.
Have a wonderful, rainy day,
Mrs. Koch

Good Morning 4th and 5th graders and parents,
I hope that you are all healthy and safe.
I wanted to let you know that on Monday the staff of Vaughan will be developing a calendar that will have activities for you to participate in. These will be optional academic activities that will help you review and maintain some of your learning.
I will continue to keep in touch via DOJO, my class web page, and phone calls. Please let me know what I can do for you!
Keep up the work on Clever Websites, including Discovery Ed, Newsela, MyOn, and Dreambox. Those of you with Imagine Learning log ins keep up the work on that program, too.
Thinking of you today and every day!!
Mrs. Koch
Wednesday, April 8, 2020
Good Morning Students and Parents,
As you know, I have been encouraging students to log on to the Clever page on Vaughan and find their Office 365 account. Then they can look at the Outlook section and find their e-mail.
Next week our school will begin giving activities for students to complete at home. Many times, this will involve websites on Clever.
Please take some time now, to make sure that you can access Clever and your e-mail. (So far only two 5th graders have accessed their e-mail and five 4th graders have).
Have a wonderful day!
Mrs. Koch

Tuesday, April 7, 2020
Good Morning 4th Graders and Parents,
Today I am going to continue to challenge you! Yesterday I sent an email explaining how to send an e-mail. Although you all did better than the 5th graders, I still only received 3 emails from you and/or parents.
Since this will be one way that we will be communicating in coming days, I would really like to have to try to make it work. Just to remind you, here are the instructions:
First, go to Elizabeth Vaughan and click on the Students Tab. Ms. Roberts has told me that it's best to click on Clever when you see it under the Students Tab. She said you don't need to go to Vaughan online to get to Clever.
Once you are in Clever, you find the Office 365 icon and click on it. Then, you can click on Outlook. This is your e-mail. If you click on Outlook you should find your e-mail with an e-mail FROM ME!!!
I will keep track of students and parents who are responding to assure that I know which emails are working.
Thank you all for trying this adventure with me!
Mrs. Koch

Monday, April 6, 2020
Good Morning Students and Parents,
I hope that all of you are healthy and well as we start our "spring break".
Today, I thought that I would ask each student to check their e-mail. I can hear you now saying, "Mrs. Koch, I don't have an email!". Well that's where you are mistaken. Every student has an email. It is their user name plus @pwcs-edu.org
You can easily get to your e-mail by going to Clever. There is a logo that says "Microsoft 365" I'll take a picture and send it to you!

Once you find the icon, if you click on it you will have a row of options to pick from. Select the one that says "Outlook". That's your e-mail!! Hopefully, you will see an email from me in your in box. I am going to take a picture of the "Outlool" icon for you now.

When you get to your e-mail student you will (hopefully) see that I wrote to you. Please feel free to write me back. Your parents will also have an e-mail from me if they have a working e-mail that they gave to the office at the beginning of the year. I will be glad to add an e-mail if they have a new one. Just let me know.
Have a great day enjoying the spring weather!
Mrs. Koch

Good Morning Parents and Students!
Today I am going to show you how to get a digital library card from Prince William County. Once you have a digital library card, you can download their e-book app called Hoopla and read on any device! Even a phone!!
I will be taking a few pictures so hang on!!

First go to the PWC Library site. Then scroll down until you see the big banner saying “sign up for your library card today”

Once you have pressed that you will go to the part offering a digital library card

Then you will go to the part that says “don’t have a PWPLS library card? Click here to learn more
Now your parent or guardian must check this spot. It says you must be 18

Now choose Potomac Library and put in your zip code. I’ll put in Vaughan’s zip code.

Your parent needs to fill in the application

Remember the pin you pick - you’ll need it later!

Now you get a temporary bar code - write this down!!

Your password is the 4-digit pin you made before

The next part involves making an account with hoopla. You should use the same email that you put on your application for the library card.
The librarian told me that on hoopla all you need to do is put in the email that you put on your application and choose Prince William county library system and you will be able to start checking out!!

Look at all Diary if a Wimpy Kid books there are!!

And Boxcar Children
Well - that’s it for today. Tomorrow I will show you how to find books on another website called Epic. Let me know how I can help you!!

Good Morning Students and Families!
Today is April Fools Day. I do NOT like serious pranks, just playful ones. I might try to put some food coloring in Emma's milk so when she pours it on her cereal it will come out a funny color! I'll let you know how that goes.
Don't forget that meals are available at Fred Lynn and Woodbridge Middle School from 9-11 today and every weekday. They are for take out and are given to all students under 18.
I have some exciting news. The district has added Dreambox to Clever. Ms. Roberts recommends going to Elizabeth Vaughan then going to the students tab. Once you're there, look below Vaughan Online and you will see Clever. She recommends going through there to get to Clever.
Remember when you log in the first time on your home device, you will have to use the extension @pwcs-edu.org after your username.
Once you get through to Clever, you will find Dreambox towards the bottom of the screen (at least it was on mine). You should be able to click on it and it should take you in.
Have a great day. Please let me know if you can not get on and I will be glad to help you as best as I can!
Mrs. Koch

Good Morning,
I hope you are doing well! We have no news to report after the meeting with Mr. Boyd. We are going to continue providing you with resources to use during this time. I will also be trying to contact a few parents each day.
Parents, if you have an specific needs I can help you with, please let me know. Shopping day for me is Friday. If you need certain things that you haven't been able to find locally, I will be glad to look when I go out.
Don't forget that every day from 9-11 Monday-Friday, Woodbridge Middle School and Fred Lynn Middle School make take out meals for breakfast and lunch for all students under 18.
I can't wait to start making phone calls this morning to see how some of you are doing!!
Have a great day!!

Good Morning Students and Parents,
I hope that you had a good weekend, and that all of you are healthy!
To keep up with your learning in Reading I recommend 3 things:

1. Go onto Clever and find NEWSELA. I've selected some interesting non-fiction articles for you to read and take mini quizzes on. I can see when you go on and do them.

2. Find a spare notebook or some sheets of paper that you can keep together. Write every day. You might write a journal about this time to save and look back at. OR you might look at "Mrs.Koch's Class Page" on the Vaughan Website. On that website there is a file under the "documents" section that has writing prompts for this week. If you write, and you would like to share with me that would make my day! You can email me kochfe@pwcs.edu or take a picture and Dojo it to me!

3. READ a good fiction book. You might have a good book or you might go onto Clever and see if you can find a book using the MyOn website that is now showing up in Clever. A few of you have asked me for book club packets for the books that you are reading. I would LOVE to send you a book club packet to work through. Please let me know what you're reading and I will do my best to get some sort of packet to you! Also, if you run out of books, I will get some to you! I have some here at my house and I would love to share!!
Today, Mr. Boyd will be having a meeting with all of the teachers. I will let you know if there is any new information that comes out of that.
Have a wonderful day.
Mrs. Koch

March 27, 2020
Good Morning Parents and Students,
I hope that all of you are healthy. We are doing fine here. I have been able to talk to some of you and I have heard that many of you are spending time each day reading.
Although I don't have as many books here as I do at school, if you need a book to read let me know. I do have quite a few. I'd be glad to share and drop them off to you (although we couldn't see or touch one another).
If you have access to the computer and the internet you might want to spend some time on Virginia Studies Weekly (4th Graders) or Newsela (5th graders) which you can find in Clever. Ms. Carroll also told me that MYON, that reading program is now also appearing under Clever! We hope that soon Dreambox will be added, too.
Please take a look at my web page on Vaughan online for ideas for writing prompts and other activities. If you do want to write and send my your writing I would really enjoy reading it.
Have a great day. Please let me know if you need log ins or anything else I can help you with.
Miss you - Ms. Koch

Thursday March 26, 2020
Good Morning Students,
Today I thought that I would ask you to respond to me! I have a simple question - WHAT ARE YOU READING?
I have 90 Book Club Packets and one of the packets might be just right for you! You and your mom/dad/big sister/big brother/babysitter could have your own book club discussion!

I also posted some "writing prompts" up on my web page under the documents. I'm going to keep updating the writing prompts so that you can write at least 4/5 days each week. If you do write to the prompts, why not send me a picture of your writing? I'd love to see it!

To the parents: Please stay safe and stay in touch. We are waiting to find out how we can best help you continue to learn during this time. Please contact me with and questions or concerns.

Wednesday March 25, 2020
Good Morning 4th and 5th graders and parents,
Today I would like to share with you some ideas from the Prince William County Schools Home Learning website. They have some great suggestions for how to keep busy during this time. They also have some suggestions for daily schedules to keep you focused and active even though we can't be together.
One idea that they give is to get active together in the morning. You might do some dancing together. Teach your mom or dad a dance move. Go to Go Noodle for their new activities under "Good Energy at Home" section. Maybe do some sit ups and push ups like you have to do at school when you do your exercise test. Doing even one more push up each day will (5 one day - 6 the next - 7 the day after....) will make you stronger!
Today I am going to ask Emma to teach me a new dance move. If I can get the hang of it I will send the video here! At least it will be good for a laugh!!
ALSO - I found out that Prince William County is offering breakfast and lunch at Fred Lynn and Woodbridge Middle School for take out. They are now doing that from 9-11 every day Monday - Friday. It used to be only 9-10 but now it is 9-11!!! There are other schools, too. You can find the whole list at Prince William County's website.
Do I need to say it again? I MISS YOU. Have a great day

Tuesday, March 24, 2020
Good Morning,
As I am sure you all know, school is closed for the rest of the year. I hope that you know that I am thinking about you every day. I will continue to post here to give you ideas about things you can do. I will also see if I can find a way for us to have "Book Clubs" where we can discuss books that we are reading.
For now, please take a look at the online resources that the County has provided. You can find lots of interesting things on the District's Website. Also, you can use my class page on Vaughan, as well as using Vaughan online to get to learning websites.
Kids, if you have that packet of reading passages that I sent out, please break it out! This is NOT a graded assignment, but it can keep you reading and thinking while we are apart.
I miss you. Please let me know if there is anything you need.
Mrs. Koch
